Kopete in KDE 4.1: A Visual Changelog

With Beta 1 out of the door KDE 4.1 is nearly feature-complete: Time for a quick view at some changes and new features in Kopete. Ignoring bug fixes and changes "under the hood" for now, here's a quick visual overview of new features:

Status Manager message configuration (left) and status configuration (right)

The new Status Manager greatly simplifies status changes for the various protocols supported by Kopete. It allows for a quick status (message) change, both available from icons at the bottom of the Kopete main window.

Still it's possible to fully customize status for different account types. Using the Status configuration tab in Kopete's Settings, you can strip down available status choices to just a few you are actually using or set up a complicated combination of different types and messages.

Chat and event notifications can become rather intrusive when they occur frequently. The notification system has been revisited to avoid unnecessary events and features a more versatile configuration.

Event configuration in Kopete Settings

Don't miss the "Configure Notifications" settings dialog when tweaking events to your liking:

Event configuration for KNotify

Last not least a new widget to display Service Messages has been added. It is meant to display less important messages that do not need immediate attention.

Notifications

Service messages can be displayed and hidden using the flag icon in the left bottom of the Kopete main window. A green flag indicates the availability of new service messages.

Popup messages now support emoticon rendering.

Emoticon rendering in message previews

Furthermore emoticons are now rendered using the new KDE-wide Emoticons library. While emoticon themes could be added and deleted from within Kopete previously, the new KDE-wide Emoticon Manager (available from System Settings or directly from Kopete) supports customizing every emoticon in a theme with a nice dialog:

KNewStuff2 integration in the Emoticons Manager

Not only the Emoticons manager, but also the Chat Style selection dialog is capable of quickly downloading new themes from the internet using the KNewStuff2 facilities.

Chat Window Style selection using KNS2

More polishing happened at various places. Task manager icons no longer look blurry and systray icons make full use of the Oxygen style -- or whatever style you use, icons are now generated automatically from the current icon theme.

There are lots of other changes and new features not mentioned here, as well as numerous bug fixes and stability improvements. Just have a look yourself :-)

  1. hi,

would you know if it’s possible to turn off this popup messages? on incoming messages, they always appear if the chat window is not active. this happens for each line i receive.
    cheers!

  2. You can disable them via “Settings” => “Configure Notifications” and/or modify their behavior through “Settings” => “Configure” => “Behavior” => “Events” => “Treat all chats on the current desktop like active chats”.

  3. wow… this looks very nice – good work – thanks a lot!

  4. Nice! 1 feature stops me from using it, can we add emoticons “on the fly” from received messages? (if no, pleeease?) I love getting emoticons from my friends.

  5. Currently that’s not implemented, although it might be a nice addition especially now that we have a general emoticon module in KDE that supports theme management. You can vote for http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=112027 in the meantime… :-)

  6. Still no plan for IRC support?

    (Thanks for working on Kopete)

  7. It’s being rewritten in the background and not yet ready for 4.1. I’d expect it in 4.2, but no promises on that.

  8. I love Kopete even though XMPP-MUC integration is lousy to say the least.

  9. What about audio/video support for various protocols?

  10. the video support work with solid ???

    nice work.

  11. Very cool! Now I gotta start using IM again! :P

  12. Jabber usability in kopete sucks… Anyone plant to work on it? There are many wishes in bugs.kde.org but seems nobody doesn’t want resolving it…

  13. Does anyone know if http proxies will finally be supported with Kopete?

  14. Hi,

I’m using the 4.1 version right now. It’s nice and usable but still needs some love, please keep the good work.

I have an aesthetic issue regarding the app logo, is it final? Personally I like this alternative (I think it was the first Oxygen on) much more ( http://techbase.kde.org/images/archive/8/80/20080703064443!Kopete.svg ). I think the actual looks a bit strange, especially against a bright background.

Maybe i’m writing in the wrong blog but anyway…

  15. Wow, fantastic job! Keep up the great work!!! =:)
